The Palace of Illusions: A Novel

Taking us back to a time that is half history, half myth and wholly magical, bestselling author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni gives voice to Panchaali, the fire-born heroine of the Mahabharata, as she weaves a vibrant retelling of an ancient epic saga.

Married to five royal husbands who have been cheated out of their father's kingdom, Panchaali aids their quest to reclaim their birthright, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war. But she cannot deny her complicated friendship with the enigmatic Krishna--or her secret attraction to the mysterious man who is her husbands' most dangerous enemy--as she is caught up in the ever-manipulating hands of fate.

**Personal Review of *The Palace of Illusions*** *The Palace of Illusions* by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a mesmerizing reimagining of the Mahabharata through the eyes of the enchanting Draupadi. Reading it transported me into a world of vibrant emotions and complex relationships. Draupadi's fierce spirit and vulnerability resonated deeply with me, as I found myself reflecting on my own struggles for identity and agency. Divakaruni's lyrical prose enveloped me in a rich tapestry of myth and desire, leaving me spellbound by Draupadi's journey from a palace of grandeur to the depths of betrayal. It beautifully explores themes of destiny and empowerment, igniting a sense of introspection about my own life choices. This novel is more than a retelling; it’s a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. *The Palace of Illusions* has left an indelible mark on my heart, inspiring me to embrace my own narrative in a world filled with turmoil and complexity.

Stories we've heard throughout childhood, a story involving love, friendship, honor, duty, loyalty, politics, war...... you name it we have it. All this through Draupadi's eyes, the woman who changed the course of history. The woman with five husbands, Panchaali. This book offers a unique perspective to the epic tale, Mahabharata. It weaves a beautiful series of stories which makes the readers feel for her while keeping the essence of the epic intact. Definitely worth reading!
