I forced myself to finish this, as it got such great reviews. But I hated the layout (some "chapters" were less than one full page, and hated that the author never used quotation marks to indicate speech. I got used to it eventually, but as an editor, it made me crazy. The story was okay. I wouldn't recommend it.

Lovely characters and a well-rounded story. I picked this one up at random in the library, based on its recommendation by Wally Lamb, and it has the same kind of unflinching yet sympathetic feel as Lamb's books. Enjoyed it very much.
