The Night Circus: A Novel

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

I’m calling it. It’s a DNF. No one is more disappointed than me. Clearly I’m an outlier here, but really.. did I read the same book as everyone else? I honestly do enjoy purple prose. Give me all the flowery writing. But there’s gotta be a plot. Maybe this had…. Inklings of a plot? The circus. The dinners. The magicians. I honestly could not have cared less. I really was looking forward to reading this one so it pains me to have hated it so much.

I enjoyed this book but it is the most unusual book I have read in a long time. I would think it would appeal to fans of magical realism.

I don't understand the hype for this book. The author was trying to be so deep that it fell flat.
