The Mysterious Benedict Society

For fans of Lemony Snicket and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, this first book in the bestselling, award-winning Mysterious Benedict Society series is not to be missed!

"Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?" Dozens of children respond to this peculiar newspaper ad and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children--two boys and two girls--succeed. Their challenge: a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. To accomplish it, they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. But what they'll find in the hidden underground tunnels of the school is more than your average school supplies. So, if you're gifted, creative, or happen to know Morse Code, they could probably use your help.

What fun! And also: how weird! For a middle grade book, this one was awfully long. But it wasn't quite like anything else I've read, which was very refreshing!

I knew Constance would probably end up playing a pivotal role, to justify all her annoying behaviors early on, but I didn't expect the reveal at the end -- and find it kind of hard to believe that no one had guessed her age already.

I look forward to seeing what kind of trouble the society gets itself into in the next book!

Read this aloud with my 7 year old and he loved it so much he kept reading ahead on his own and then crowing to me that I had 40 pages to read to catch up. “What? I can’t help if it’s a really good book!” he kept saying. When he finished (again, without me), he called me up at work to tell me everything that happened. So I have to love a book that got him so excited about reading! As an adult, I found the book a bit silly, but in a fun way.

Cute read! I read this as a pre read for a teacher friend. I think it would be an excellent middle grade book, about finding out your gifts and how to use them. Definitely recommend to anyone with that age children or anyone who is interested in a light but good read.

A very good read a like towards lemony snickett's "unfortunate event" series.

This series isn't as morose though. Good start. Happy neat ending. There's a next book? Ok, bring it. I'm curious.
