The Mist

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King’s terrifying novella about a town engulfed in a dense, mysterious mist as humanity makes its last stand against unholy destruction—originally published in the acclaimed short story collection Skeleton Crew and made into a TV series, as well as a feature film starring Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden.
In the wake of a summer storm, terror descends...David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves, a religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly, staying in the store may prove fatal, and the Draytons, along with store employee Ollie Weeks, Amanda Dumfries, Irene Reppler, and Dan Miller, attempt to make their escape. But what’s out there may be worse than what they left behind.
This exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know—and the one you can only imagine.

Originally found as a novella in King's Skeleton Crew, The Mist mainly centers around David Drayton, his son Billy, and a group of people that get trapped in a grocery store when a sudden mist filled with Lovecraftian things falls over a small town in, you guessed it, Maine! While I'm not wholly in love with this particular story, I thought it was a good, fast read that works really well as a novella, but would have fallen flat if it were a complete novel. While some will be a little upset with not knowing what, exactly, is going on in the story and even more upset that there are no answers at the end, I thought this worked a lot better than the cinematic version. Oh, don't get me wrong! I did enjoy the movie a great deal as well, but as something very separate because, let's face it, the movie is a lot more bleak than the novella actually is. If you are alright with not having everything wrapped up neatly at the end of a story and like to use your imagination when it comes to the unknown, this would be a great read for a week if you commute to and from work on public transport! This would also be a good book to read if you're a passenger during a short-ish road trip to and from somewhere! Definitely worth a read, too, if Lovecraft mixed with classic King is your thing!
While this book wasn't terrible, it wasn't all that great either. It felt a little lackluster compared to some of his other books. I also felt as though there should have been parts left out that didn't really add to the story.

Good read. Way better than the movie.
Best Stephen King I've read. The panic felt real, the fear behind the unknown is absolutely anxiety inducing. One of his best works, the monster isn't man but rather something you'd never expect in real life.
