What a disappointment having picked this book based on so many favorable reviews. Still so aggravated, what most stands out is the extraneous overly-detailed explanations of too many things. And that’s what it was: more telling than showing. Additionally, I was at no-point on the edge of my seat; how “heart pounding”, “terrifying”, “gripping” are associated with this novel are beyond me. Now, “eye-rolling”, “ridiculous”, “implausible” I could see. Also, it ticked me off how main-character knew SO MUCH from her “Geographics” - until it wasn’t convenient for her TO know/understand something. I was put-off by the level of graphic explanation for what they were doing to animals, and wondered of the accuracy, and if potential insult to native Americans for some of the depictions. Particularly in absence of any credit references/acknowledgement. Grrrrr…
A page turner psychological thriller. I couldn’t stop reading to learn more about Helena’s story and find out how it ends. Helena is the product of a kidnapping and grows up in isolation in a marsh area in Michigan’s upper peninsula, with his father and kidnapped mother, although Helena doesn’t know about that until she is about 12. After she and her mother scape she has to adapt to a world she doesn’t know, and to the love/hate feelings for a father that she grew up adoring and now has escaped from prison threatening her new life. I always like being familiar with the area in which the story occurs, like in this case. Very entertaining although with some violent descriptions.

Helena es el producto de un secuestro y crece aislada en una área pantanosa de la Upper Peninsula de Michigan, solo con su padre y su madre secuestrada, aunque Helena no conoce la historia hasta que tiene alrededor de 12 años. Después que Helena y su madre escapan, tiene que adaptarse a un mundo que no conoce, y a los sentimientos de amor y odio hacia un padre al que adoraba en su niñez, y que ahora ha escapado de prisión amenazando su nueva vida. Siempre me gusta conocer la zona donde se desarrolla la historia del libro, como este caso. Muy entretenido aunque con algunas descripciones violentas.

This story did not keep me awake at night turning pages as fast as I could. It wasn't a great psychological story either. It had a great premise, but just dragged for me. Helene is the young girl whose mom was kidnapped and raped as a teenager by the "Marsh King." Completely isolated from the outside world, Helene does not even realize she is the daughter of a terrible man who kidnapped and abused her mother. Instead, she loves and idolizes her father
This was such a page turner of a book. Not based on a true story (as I had originally thought) this book follows a daughter's struggle to turn her father in after he escapes prison. Though the turmoil starts well before when she realizes that her father abducted her mother at 14 and she is a result of his holding her captive. Now married with two children of her own, what decisions will she make to keep her own family safe from her father? Her cunning and wilderness upbringing will be tested in everyway as she tracks her father and ultimately makes a decision on what to do!
