The Magician's Nephew

Narnia . . . a land frozen in eternal winter . . . a country waiting to be set free

Witness the creation of a magical land in The Magician's Nephew, the first title in C. S. Lewis's classic fantasy series, which has captivated readers of all ages for over sixty years.

On a daring quest to save a life, two friends are hurled into another world, where an evil sorceress seeks to enslave them. But then the lion Aslan's song weaves itself into the fabric of a new land, a land that will be known as Narnia. And in Narnia, all things are possible.

This is a stand-alone novel, but if you want to journey back to Narnia, read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the second book in The Chronicles of Narnia.

This story is told entirely through third-person narration, giving readers insight into the thoughts and motivations of multiple characters. It follows the adventures of Digory and Polly as they travel through magical worlds, while Digory desperately hopes to find a magical fruit that can heal his dying mother. The book is well known for its classic values and timeless themes. It feels spiritual without being overtly religious, offering lessons about courage, temptation, kindness, and hope. While reading, I couldn’t help noticing the contrast between the values often taught to children in the 1950s, when this was written, and those emphasized today, even though the story itself is set in an earlier time period. I especially enjoyed the warm, feel-good nature of C. S. Lewis’s writing. His words flow naturally, and there is a sense of wonder, magic, and hope woven throughout the story. The characters are wonderfully written and experience remarkable growth in such a short book. You quickly become invested in what happens to them, and if you continue with the series, it is rewarding to see how their stories connect to the larger world of Narnia. Although this is part of a series, it stands very well on its own. A must-read for both children and adults.

Really enjoyed this book. I read the other books in the series first and then came back to this and I think that was the right choice. I like the adventure in this book and how it leads into The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Really enjoyed this book! I understand this is a child’s books but it is also one of those great classics, and I never read them up until now. The collection I purchased is apparently British one from my understanding, and this is the first in the series per CJ Lewis preferred reading order so I went with it. It was really intriguing to learn the backstory behind how Narnia came to be and to learn that Diggory is the old professor in the movie! (Normally I will not read a book series after I have watched the TV series or movies but since these books were relatively short, I figured why not have a go at them!) Overall though I remained captivated the entire book!

I’m starting my Narnia journey! These are definitely different writing style than I’m used to. But it was a fun read. ☺️
