I really expected more from this book! As a self taught genealogist, I understood the many rabbit holes the author went down and the circuitous routes he took. I do not understand his beginning each chapter with an imaginary story of his grandfather. I also felt that once he finally got a handle on where to look he packed months of research into one chapter and was done. It would have been better to have actually detailed what went on then instead of the fruitless years before. It seemed obvious that he should have examined every US census got the missing years using the variations on the Hammond name. All in all it was interesting but not satisfying book.
