The Lonely Hearts Book Club

A young librarian and an old curmudgeon forge the unlikeliest of friendships in this charming, feel-good novel about one misfit book club and the lives (and loves) it changed along the way.

Sloane Parker lives a small, contained life as a librarian in her small, contained town. She never thinks of herself as lonely...but still she looks forward to that time every day when old curmudgeon Arthur McLachlan comes to browse the shelves and cheerfully insult her. Their sparring is such a highlight of Sloane's day that when Arthur doesn't show up one morning, she's instantly concerned. And then another day passes, and another.

Anxious, Sloane tracks the old man down only to discover him all but bedridden...and desperately struggling to hide how happy he is to see her. Wanting to bring more cheer into Arthur's gloomy life, Sloane creates an impromptu book club. Slowly, the lonely misfits of their sleepy town begin to find each other, and in their book club, find the joy of unlikely friendship. Because as it turns out, everyone has a special book in their heart--and a reason to get lost (and eventually found) within the pages.

Books have a way of bringing even the loneliest of souls together...

I really loved this book, I can’t emphasize enough. It captures the realities of life’s aches and pains, ebbs and flows, laughter and tears but most importantly, it captures how good friendships are essential to get through all of those things. This is a different kind of love story, the story about love between friends. I ended this book with a sense of longing to be part of something as special as this little book club.

I enjoyed this book for the most part, but I did want something more from it. I feel like the "resolutions" to a couple of the characters plot-lines were unsatisfying, and since that's most of what the book has going for it in terms of story, that feels more significant than it might in a more plot heavy book. What the book does well is show a group of strangers coming together as true friends, which is a type of story that I eat up just about every time. I just had a few lingering doubts and concerns here that I would have rather been addressed better, and there were parts of the writing that felt a little too forced even for my sentimental soft heart.

This was a book club pick and it took me by surprise, I loved it. It was so much deeper than I expected. Very heartwarming and endearing with a great cast of people who found each other at the right times in all their lives. Book #13 in 2024

Every book is not for every reader. This book was a great example of that for me, personally. The book has no plot - flatlines after a very small blip in the beginning. It goes through the lives of a few who are all tied to a female librarian. The only thing I will give kudos to the author would be the development of the main character.

If you like reading about the lives of regular people in regular scenarios, this is the book for you.
If you want a book to escape reality - this is not the book- keep searching.

Delightful and heartwarming read. Although this book was slow to start, it picked up speed and I could not put it down. Per usual, I did not read the summary before starting this book and found myself pleasantly surprised to find grief and connection the underlying themes. Currently I am 9 months into a heavy grief journey and 3 weeks into another loss. I found myself comforted by this novel and the wisdom sprinkled throughout it’s pages.
