The Last Anniversary: An Unforgettable Mystery of Family Secrets and Unexpected Inheritance

From Liane Moriarty, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers, comes an unforgettable novel defined by her signature sharp wit, page-turning storyline, and lovable and eccentric characters.

A family secret explodes. A first kiss betrays. A mystery is solved. A marriage is tested. It all happens on one extraordinary night—the Last Anniversary!

Sophie Honeywell always wondered if Thomas Gordon was the one who got away. He was the perfect boyfriend, but on the day he was going to propose, she broke his heart. A year later he married his travel agent, while Sophie has been mortifyingly single ever since. Now Thomas is back in her life because Sophie has unexpectedly inherited his aunt Connie's house on Scribbly Gum Island—home of the famously unsolved Munro Baby mystery.

Sophie moves onto the island and begins a new life as part of an unconventional family, where it seems everyone has a secret. Grace, a beautiful young mother, is feverishly planning a shocking escape from her perfect life. Margie, a frumpy housewife, has made a pact with a stranger, while dreamy Aunt Rose wonders if maybe it's about time she started making her own decisions.

As Sophie's life becomes increasingly complicated, she discovers that sometimes you have to stop waiting around—and come up with your own fairy-tale ending.

I do love Liane Moriarty but this one was not my favorite. It was a bit slow for me and way too many characters. I listened to this one, so it was hard to just flip back and find out who was who. Like many of Moriarty's novels, this is about a large dysfunctional family, mostly females. Each family member has a story and it got confusing and tedious at times. I thought it was going to be about Sophia, who inherits an old "aunt's" house and her ex-boyfriend, Thomas. Instead, it was about Thomas' large dysfunctional family and the Munro baby mystery. (The house really belongs to Thomas' aunt, so I never understood why Sophia inherited it.) Anyway, it took so long to get the real story of the Munro mystery and Sophie's story seemed to be secondary. Connie and Rose are sisters who found the Munro baby 75 years ago and raised the baby, and the other characters were all the decedents of baby Egnima. I didn't like most of the characters. Veronica was just mean and nasty, Grace hated being a mom, Laura was hardly a mother to Grace, Connie was controlling and manipulative...Margie was kinda funny. But like all Moriarty novels, there is a twist at the end, and this happened at the very end. The best part is Rose telling the "egghead" story and revealing the Breadboard Murder Mystery!

Another excellent book by Liane Moriarty. I don't really like to give frilly, detailed reviews (sorry). What I can say is the book is a real page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed having the plot unravel. (AND a whopping ending!)

This was a slow starter, but once I got into it a bit, the quirkiness of the characters really hooked me. It's all about making connections and being open to life's little opportunities. Sophie blushes. Really blushes. And she is fast approaching 40 with no marriage and family in sight. Out of nowhere, a bequest from a woman she had barely met but connected with, changes her life. A story of intrigue and mundane details. Set in Australia.
