Really enjoyed this book. This is for one of my book clubs and the same club had already chosen to read the sequel, Glory Over Everything “, so I went into this a little nervous hoping I wouldn’t hate it since we had already committed to another one. I was so happy that after just two chapters in I was hooked. I loved hearing the “voices” of the different characters with each chapter and how over time they grew and learned about and from each other. I also appreciated the author showing just how confusing it must have been during those times and how hard life was for so many. She showed there was the worst which was the true slavery but there were other forms of slavery that weren’t named. This book, I felt, showed both the horror of slavery but also the light of the human spirit that survived the horror. Very well crafted characters who made you really feel you knew them.
