The Invasion of the Tearling: A Novel (Queen of the Tearling, The, 2)

In this riveting, New York Times-bestselling sequel to The Queen of the Tearling, the evil kingdom of Mortmesne invades the Tearling, with dire consequences for Kelsea and her realm.
With each passing day, Kelsea Glynn is growing into her new responsibilities as Queen of the Tearling. By stopping the shipments of slaves to the neighboring kingdom of Mortmesne, she crossed the Red Queen, a brutal ruler whose power derives from dark magic, who is sending her fearsome army into the Tearling to take what is hers. And nothing can stop the invasion.
But as the Mort army draws ever closer, Kelsea develops a mysterious connection to a time before the Crossing, and she finds herself relying on a strange and possibly dangerous ally: a woman named Lily, fighting for her life in a world where being female can feel like a crime. The fate of the Tearling —and that of Kelsea’s own soul—may rest with Lily and her story, but Kelsea may not have enough time to find out.
In this dazzling sequel, Erika Johansen brings back favorite characters, including the Mace and the Red Queen, and introduces unforgettable new players, adding exciting layers to her multidimensional tale of magic, mystery, and a fierce young heroine.

I liked the switching back and forth between Lily's story and Kelsea's. It gave an interesting duality to the book.
I don't quite know what it is with the pattern of second in a trilogy being best (i.e. Rebel Angels of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy), but I'm placing bets on Invasion of the Tearling remaining my favorite of the soon-to-be three. Finally, a book I could not put down! I was enthralled from start to finish. Although there were times I felt Erika Johansen was trying just a bit too hard to be different, I greatly appreciated the effort. What was born from this striving was a progressive yet original work. I have never read a 500+ page book faster.
A scene I found riveting and respectable was Kelsea's dinner with the Holy Father. What an ingenious battle of wits amid corruption and veiled motives. I also LOVED the addition of Lily's narrative. Her story interwoven with Kelsea's touched my heart and challenged my mind. Books that make me think I admire, books that allow me to feel I cherish.
Although certain plot points I could decipher ahead of time, this book still surprised me. There's nothing more I could write to succinctly detail my love for Invasion of the Tearling. I would need to sit a friend down and go chapter by chapter just to begin. Thank you, Erika Johansen!!
