Just reread this. I'd read this twice as a teenager and don't recall feeling such sorrow whilst reading it.
As multiple reviewers have pointed out , Jacqueline Wilson's mother's always have major issues and this story is no exception. This book got to me as the mother reminded me of an alcoholic I once knew that I was forced to turn my back on due to her neglecting her children and putting her interests above her own children.
Really hit home. I now understand why this book was marketed towards older teenagers when it was first released.
Sad and not a particularly happy ending either.
