This is not a book I would normally pick up, but is definitely one I have no regrets reading.
It consists of short stories which have completely unexpected twists and turns and you find yourself being caught up in the current story. To me the author seemed to write so beautifully, beginning her tales from the most unexpected moments and very smoothly going back and forth and revealing the whole picture. After most of the chapters I needed to take a few minutes at least to understand what I read, to experience everything it made me feel. I believe that everyone can take something from at least one story and see themselves from another perspective.
I wanted to add some quotes so that you can get a sense of what is The Houseguest and Other Stories but that really is in the entirety of every story and a single sentence can't bring the emotions a whole chapter could. I liked how the stories were ordered as well, especially towards the end. The chosen ones were the perfect for closing the book and making up your mind about it.
I could read it only before 4pm as I cannot calm myself enough to sleep after such a read. There were a lot of moments that made me freeze and be utterly shocked by the realization of what is happening. Dávila's book excited me and I feel like this is one of the signs that someone is a good writer.
