I first learned about Ruby Franke from an episode of 20/20, and I remember feeling shocked by the disturbing details—especially how long the abuse went on behind closed doors and under the spotlight of their massive YouTube following. When I saw Shari Franke's memoir at Barnes and Noble, I was eager to read it and hear her voice—her version of events, her pain, her truth. The House of My Mother is heartbreaking and uncomfortable, but it’s also courageous, honest, and deeply important. Shari doesn’t just recount the trauma—she gives readers a raw look into what it’s like to grow up in a family where control, manipulation, and image mattered more than safety, love, and protection. If you are drawn to memoirs of survival and resilience, a fan of true crime and family dynamics, and curious about the darker side of influencer culture, this book will grip you and leave a lasting impression. I was pretty surprised I’ve only recently heard of this story, considering how recent it is, but I watched the Hulu docuseries on Ruby and it had me mind boggled. I knew I had to read Shari’s story when I saw it and even though I knew the outcome, it still shocked me. This story is sad and crazy but unfortunately the themes are most likely not as uncommon as we may hope. I am amazed by Shari’s strength and courage despite everything she’s gone through and I’m glad she was able to speak out about her perspective. This is definitely worth the read but make sure you’re aware of the story (at least a little) before diving in because it covers some heavy topics that could be triggering to a lot of people.

I am unfamiliar with Ruby Franke and the 8 passengers social media. I read this under the suggestion of others and I think the author did a great job of introducing and building up the influences that eventually took over her mother to be less of a maternal role and more of a cult-like follower. I respect the fact that the author prioritized her younger siblings protection (even if her mother already over exposed them on the internet) to make this story just her own. I wish the author a success in building her own future and finding her familial connections.
