The Heroes

They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter, and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

The Nerdy Narrative

The Heroes, the second standalone of Joe Abercrombie's First Law world is now my favorite of the standalones and ranks high among my favorites of all I've read in First Law so far.

The continuation of a particular character arc (that will go unnamed for those who might peek at this before reading the previous books) is one of my absolute favorites in fantasy, definitely my favorite in this world. Pure genius is what it is.

I fell in love with First Law and Abercrombie as an author with The Blade Itself, which has led to me reading through everything he's written. This month was The Heroes which had everything I love from Abercrombie: excellent characters, dark humor, grit, battles, scheming, backstabbing and betrayals - and - an accurate, no frills depiction of what wars actually consist of...a whole lot of waiting and boredom, with a side of sickness and accidents. This book also had its fair share of surprises and turns you never see coming even though Abercrombie is famous for them....he continues to get me with each book even though I'm looking for them. LOL - I love it!

Thoroughly enjoyed this one and looking forward to continuing with Red Country!
