The Good Immigrant

We’re told that we live in a multicultural melting pot – that we’re post-racial. Yet, studies show that throughout the UK, people from BAME groups are much more likely to live in poverty than white British people (Institute of Race Relations). It’s a hard time to be an immigrant, or the child of one, or even the grandchild of one.
Gathering BAME voices from across Britain in a searing selection of essays exploring otherness, racial inequality and the immigrant experience, Nikesh Shukla expertly curates this book full of revealing insights on every page. Varied in tone yet coherent in intent, the pieces that form The Good Immigrant provide an invaluable snapshot of modern Britain.

I say this is a must read book and have been recommending it to a few friends this last week. Some of these stories are 6 stars (yes 6 out of 5) - they challenged me, opened my eyes and got me thinking differently about the world we live in. I like to think that I'm progressive, working to end discrimination etc etc but often my colour blindness just reinforces the status quo because I have engrained behaviors, habits, ideas that I need to regularly challenge. Like when I tell a story I may name John and jane as the protagonists. That's maybe what I was taught in school, the stories I've read etc. why isn't it Mohammed and luciana? I've got much more to do!
I generally don't love short stories but this proved me wrong. Overall a great collection. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because as can be expected some stories are more powerful than others. Thank you to everyone who funded this. Such s worthy donation and I am one very grateful reader
