The God of Endings: A Novel
Collette LeSange is a lonely artist who heads an elite fine arts school for children in upstate New York. Her youthful beauty masks the dark truth of her life: she has endured centuries of turmoil and heartache in the wake of her grandfather’s long-ago decision to make her immortal like himself. Now in 1984, Collette finds her life upended by the arrival of a gifted child from a troubled home, the return of a stalking presence from her past, and her own mysteriously growing hunger.

I feel like if I were rating this book just for my personal enjoyment of it, I would maybe give it a 2. This book isn't fun. As far as book quality, I don't think this is a bad book, which is why I rated it a little higher. This is a tense, dark, somber reflection on the sort of passive way that the world makes many people suffer and scrabble hopelessly. The whole book is permeated with dread. Even when there are moments of peace, they are fleeting and often wrenched away with tragedy. I will say that the end of the story was better than the one I thought it would have.

The God of Endings is a character-driven vampire story. This is apparently not my kind of story or perhaps I just didn't like the main character. Even when she was in peril I didn't find myself rooting for her. My favorite part of the story was guessing which characters were sociopaths. The ending was unsatisfying. I imagine though, that it just wasn't my thing and that others will enjoy it.
The writing in this book was beautiful and engaging, which really kept me going. But after such a long read I have to say I felt let down by the ending. I feel like the reader is pulled into so much suspense and anticipation and it mostly goes unaddressed, I was left with a lot of “why’s.” But the ending also made me feel like Colette was finally coming to terms with who she was and was working to heal from her past losses while also forgiving herself for the children she tried to help but couldn’t.
The writing is good, but the story itself is a bit “meh.” I will freely admit that I’ve only read the mainstream fantasy books like Harry Potter, Twilight, and True Blood. This story is more well written than some of those I listed, but the plot wasn’t quite as engaging for me. I also have to add that I listed to about 85% of the book as an audiobook, which I think is what kept my interest.
