"Real Housewives of New York" a hundred years ago.
Another insightful glimpse into high-society New York in the 1920s which is why I keep coming back to Edith Wharton.
Not my favorite Edith Wharton book....but OK. The poor communication of the main couple was frustrating -- reminding me at times of a simple "romance" novel.
If you want to start reading Edith Wharton, I'd suggest The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, The Age of Innocence, The Custom of the Country or Summer....all books that I think about years and even decades after reading them.

Any book by Wharton is worth it. Her elegance and turn with a phrase are just joys to read, even poetical when read out loud. And who knew she could write something that was a COMEDY of manners, questioning and commenting about the manners and social conventions of a greatly sophisticated, artificial society? The only Wharton where I have ever laughed out loud. Definitely a story that has one “keeping up with the Joneses.“ 😉
