I liked this book. It was a compelling read. It was well written and I found myself rapidly turning the pages because so many awful things were happening to Adunni , the heroine of the story that all I could think was surely her fortunes would change for the better? They did of course but not without some heartbreaking events that without her incredible bravery and determination she would not have overcome. The story is written in a Pidgin cum broken English style that suits the narrative as it reflects that English is not Adunni’s native tongue but as she masters English the style changes as the story reaches its conclusion. Happily , she finds support from other people , many of whom face risks to give her this support and in the background, the memory she has of her late mother whose memory wills her to find a voice that loudly calls for the education that she and all other (Nigerian) women and girls deserve as a basic human right.
