“A gripping thriller that will blow readers away." –Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author on Don’t Believe It
“A superb storyteller.” —Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author
Two abducted girls—one who returns, one who doesn't.
The night they go missing, high school seniors Nicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are at a beach party in their small town of Emerson Bay, North Carolina. Police launch a massive search, but hope is almost lost--until Megan escapes from a bunker deep in the woods...A year later, the bestselling account of her ordeal has made Megan a celebrity. It's a triumphant story, except for one inconvenient detail: Nicole is still missing.
Nicole's older sister, Livia, a fellow in forensic pathology, expects that one day soon Nicole's body will be found and her sister's fate determined. Instead, the first clue comes from another body--that of a young man connected to Nicole's past. Livia reaches out to Megan to learn more about that fateful night. Other girls have disappeared, and she's increasingly sure the cases are connected.
Megan knows more than she revealed in her book. Flashes of memory are pointing to something more monstrous than she described. And the deeper she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you've been looking for...

Nicole and Megan are at a high school senior beach party when they both go missing. The police and community members launch a massive search for both girls, but nothing. Two weeks later, one girl escapes, but the other one doesn’t. Megan is never the same. In order to recall what happened to her, Megan seeks therapy and writes a book about her time in captivity. This book brings on a celebrity status she dreads. A year after the abduction, Livia still blames herself for not answering the phone the night her sister went missing. Livia became a forensic pathologist and hopes to be able to examine her sister’s body to give herself and her family closure. The first clue to finding her is the body of a male from Nicole’s past. While trying to piece everything together, Livia discovers that there are other missing girls connected to to Nicole and Megan. Megan’s suppressed memories are the key to the truth, but is Megan strong enough to revisit her time in captivity??
This is an easy 5star read. Every time I felt I solved the mystery, I didn’t. This one had me at the edge of my seat. A must read!!
This book made me want to talk throughout, I’m a movie in mind reader so I was drawn in by the setting of the story. I really enjoyed the true crime feel without actually being true crime. The pacing was spot on for me, I just wish I could have ranted periodically 🤣. I will definitely pick up another book by this author.
This was the 1st book my work bookclub voted to read. I loved it! Such an intriguing read, kept me one my toes trying to guess the ending.. I was so wrong lol
I really enjoyed the plot, the way it kept me guessing, and the professional description and accuracy. Great character development as well!
6.5. Well written. Great plot. Multiple fake clues. Didn’t guess who did it. Annoying cliffhanger ending.
