The German Daughter

A heart-wrenching WWII novel by bestselling author Marius Gabriel
A stolen child. A terrible wartime secret.
Norway, 1940. Seduced by Nazi propaganda, Liv offers herself to the German High Command as war reaches rural Norway. She has something very special that they want in Berlin - but the personal cost will be terrible. Can she survive what she did as a naïve young woman in 1940?
England, 1968. Agnes, orphaned by the war, has grown up happy in the quiet wealth of the English countryside, raised by her adoring grandfather to be a perfect lady. But when he suddenly dies, she unveils a secret that changes everything. Agnes is not who she thought she was - and she is not safe.
Will Agnes pursue deep-buried secrets and put herself, and others, in danger? Will the truth set her free?

This was a surprise to me... perhaps even one of the better books I have read this year ...I have not read this author before but I thoroughly enjoyed the novel's mystery elements, intersecting plotlines, disturbing yet compelling scenes and characters and it was fascinating to read a WWII story that focused on Norway as well as East Germany following the erection of the Berlin Wall, Russian occupation in the Eastern Europe, etc. and how for some like Liv and Ulrich von Breda the ideological and political war endured - irrespective of the fall of the Third Reich and it's commanders...
I found myself totally devoted to both the protagonists - Karolina and Agnes and hooked to the threads of wickedness, agony and compassion that both tear them apart and bring them together in the unraveling of this tale....there is a lot of pain and sorrow and longing in this story but just enough brightness to block the bleakness...
Great book and interesting read. Looking forward to reading more of Marius Gabriel's books.
