This was an interesting read. At first, I wasn't sure about her seemingly obsessive relationship with olives. I soon let that go, as she wove her life story and theology into the symbolism of the olive tree. The concept of deep roots is a wonderful metaphor. The need to abide in God's time rather than our own was a key point I appreciated. Spiritual "grafting" is another wonderful metaphor. Taken from Romans 11, she embraces the Pauline principle of an individual's adoption into the greater community of faith. I think my favorite part of this book was her explanation of the "necessity of pruning and pressing". What a wonderful expression of the Christian journey. Her discussion of the rehabilitation of suffering and discipline as tools for growth is fascinating. Understanding the "pruning" as restorative rather than punitive is a key takeaway. Similarly, her idea that anointing and maturity are forged under the pressures of life (pressing) is on point. Like her beloved olive trees, she sees our growth as Christians flourishing as ultimately an act of missional witness. The primary purpose of bearing spiritual fruit is not self-actualization, but the glorification of God in a fractured, barren world. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. An easy read, and well worth it.
