The Devil Wears Black

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

From USA Today bestselling author L.J. Shen comes a second-chance romance about love, loss, finding yourself, and getting lost in the right person.

Maddie Goldbloom stitched up a plan to ensure everything in her life was perfect--from a career in fashion to a chic NYC apartment to a pediatrician boyfriend.

When her ex, Chase Black, storms back into her life with an outrageous request, her immediate reaction is to refuse him. But he only wants to fulfill his father's last wish. So even though he's the man who broke her heart, playing his fiancée shouldn't be hard, especially if it means she gets to watch the arrogant devil squirm a bit.

What ensues is a chain of events that detonates Maddie's life--and when Chase's walls come down, they both are forced to face reality.

They say keep your enemies close. But what if your enemy is also the man you love?

My favorite color is black because it's the combination of all the colors under the rainbow. So why is it that Chase Black isn't my fun loving unicorn? Yet, he's the total bad boy that you just want to tame with, oh, sorry. Gotta keep it clean. heehehe

So Maddie and Chase take turns giving you their points of views in the chapters. Maddie's chapters usually start off with a letter from her departed mother who succumbed to cancer. Her mother always tells her life lessons using flowers as metaphors. You see, her mother, Iris, was a florist. Her father loved his wife and Maddie deeply and they were both so sad when Iris passed.

At age 7, Maddie fell in love with the whole wedding idea. Not so much the men but the wedding day, dress, the festive feeling. When she was with her mother, she begged her mother to take her with Iris when she had an order for a wedding. It was fitting as she was able to stay and watch many weddings.

Later in life, she became a wedding dress designer. She wound up working for a subsidiary of Black's clothing line owned by Chase Black's father. Maddie and Chase dated for 6 months and it was hot and heavy sex with not much talking. Maddie was trying so hard to be the perfect gf for Chase that she stopped being herself. Chase loved them and left them dated her 182.5 days too long. She was supposed to be a one night fling. Instead, he stayed with her for 6 solid months. Something he doesn't do. He cheats on her and breaks her heart. She dumps him and swears death and a thousand fleas going to his... j/k...no fleas were involved nor harmed.

Chase never thought he needed to go back to Maddie to ask her to pretend to be his gf for a weekend. His father is dying and his whole family is depressed and they all adored Maddie. Chase told them he's engaged to be married to try and cheer them up. Only person who isn't all too happy is his brosin. That's brother/cousin mixed together. It'll be the perfect fake engagement and Chase will do anything for his father to be happy.

This bad boy and this sweet angel (Nicknamed Martyr Maddie) have so much sizzling sexual chemistry but what made me love this cheesy book with an ending we can all predict, is some of her witty cutting repartee. One of my favorite lines of hers includes:
“Funny, I don’t remember leaving the trash outside. Allow me to scoop you back to the recycling bin, Mr. black. Oh, you want to apologize? Can you be specific as to why? The cheating part, the humiliating part where I had to take an STD test after word, or simply for wasting my time? Are you lost, sweetie? Would you like me to escort you to the brothel you are obviously looking for?”p5

I've never read any of L.J. Shen's books before but I'm thinking maybe I'll add him to my "to read'' author's list. Not everything has to be a Pulitzer Prize book. Solid fun and guilty pleasure. Cheesy rom-com that just can’t help but make you smile from ear to ear.
