An amazing read. 'The Shadow of the Wind' is a mystery novel about a mystery novel which, of course, is called 'The Shadow of the Wind'. Characters jump in and out of each others' stories, and the more time passes, the more time arches back upon itself.
It's a long read, but well worth it. The characters are complex and clever, the comic relief (Fermin) is hilarious, and one might learn something about what WWII Catalunya was like at the time. If Garcia Marquez took a stab at penning a film noir, it might have read something like this:
"I still remember the day my father took me to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books for the first time. It was the early summer of 1945, and we walked through the streets of a Barcelona trapped beneath ashen skies as dawn poured over Rambla de Santa Monica in a wreath of liquid copper."
And if you get really into this story, there is a walking tour of Barcelona at the end of the book... so you can follow in the footsteps of the characters of 'The Shadow of the Wind.' Nice touch, Zafon.

Splendid... it took a while to get into... but I really enjoyed this book and hope to read it in Spanish!!!... Okay, nearly 6 years have passed since I first read this book and wrote that and while I did read it again, it was not in Spanish... maybe one day... However, I will stick with my 5 star rating... I love this series and can't wait to read the third installment that is scheduled to come out in a few weeks!!!
