The Bookbinder’s Secret has an objectively great setup: secret letters hidden in book bindings, a burned book, forbidden love, murder, shady collectors, and early 1900s Oxford vibes.

Honestly? Catnip for booklovers.

Enter Lilian “Lily” Delaney, an apprentice bookbinder in 1901 Oxford, who is understandably tired of men, the patriarchy, and her dad’s failing bookshop. When she stumbles upon a charred book with a fifty-year-old confession tucked inside its binding, things finally get interesting—and genuinely are, for a while.

I was fully prepared to love this. And for a while, I did—mostly whenever the story focused on dusty archives, eccentric booksellers, and the actual mystery buried inside the books. That part? Genuinely compelling.

However…

Lily Delaney herself made this reading experience… trying. I get it, she’s trapped by society, limited by her gender, and desperate for more. Totally valid. But she’s also wildly frustrating, especially when it comes to her treatment of Harry.

And, while Lily is a strong and intelligent protagonist, she occasionally makes choices that had me whispering, “ma’am… absolutely not.”

The love triangle (and yes, I’m using that term loosely) adds absolutely nothing to the story except to repeatedly demonstrate that Harry is a professional doormat and Lily is more than happy to keep him emotionally on hold while she chases secrets. It felt unnecessary, underdeveloped, and awkwardly wedged into a plot that did not need romantic angst to function.

That said, The Bookbinder’s Secret is a cozy historical mystery with a great concept, a bookish heart, and just enough suspense to keep things moving—even if it takes the scenic route.

I liked it, didn’t love it, and will absolutely still recommend it to readers who enjoy slow-burn historical intrigue, literary mysteries, and stories about women clawing their way into spaces that insist they don’t belong.
