The Bodyguard

Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker. Jack Stapleton’s a household name—captured by paparazzi on beaches the world over, famous for, among other things, rising out of the waves in all manner of clingy board shorts and glistening like a Roman deity. But a few years back, in the wake of a family tragedy, he dropped from the public eye and went off the grid. When Jack’s mom gets sick, he comes home to the family’s Texas ranch to help out. Only one catch: He doesn’t want his family to know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah—against her will and her better judgment—finds herself pretending to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover. Even though her ex, like a jerk, says no one will believe it. Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies the heartbreak. Because it’s easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But protecting her own, long-neglected heart? That’s the hardest thing she’s ever done.

This book was cute in its own little way. Had some weird turns that threw me off a little but the ending turned out cute.

Cute story line. Bantering back and forth that made me laugh.

I really enjoyed this a lot. Having the woman as the bodyguard was a refreshing take and a challenge on gender stereotypes. The banter between Jack and Hannah were absolute fun, and I adored every moment of it. There aren't any sex scenes in here, so it's a completely clean rom-com, which made me love it even more because who says we need a rom-com to be steamy all the time? Not that this doesn't have steam. It's there, just not spelled out. :)

This book also touches on something that I'm not unfamiliar with in my personal life: the fact the people don't think they deserve love. Or that they don't have love. For a moment, I felt really sad for Hannah as life threw at her one betrayal after another. I could feel the loneliness, and the need to 'escape'. Sometimes, we need another person to constantly remind us that we are worth it, that we matter. For Hannah, she found that person in Jack. But that was also something I didn't quite... like. In general, it feels as if this book is saying only romance will bring you out of the darkness - which was something I really believed for a long time. The book did cover the story of a minor person who had to find love on his own. I resonated with them a lot more, and I actually felt it would be better if that was covered a little more.

I used to believe I need another person to see my worth, but that's not true. And I hope anyone can see that. I wondered if Hannah even saw that. That's the question that made me give this 4 stars rather than a 5.

And to those who only has the choice to find love on their own, without an SO's help, you are so, so strong.
