The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

#1 New York Times bestseller

"Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding and treating traumatic stress and the scope of its impact on society." --Alexander McFarlane, Director of the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies

A pioneering researcher transforms our understanding of trauma and offers a bold new paradigm for healing in this New York Times bestseller

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world's foremost experts on trauma, has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers' capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments--from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga--that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain's natural neuroplasticity. Based on Dr. van der Kolk's own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal--and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.

It would be nice to be able to participate more. I understand that the group is much to large to do in a zoom manner. Is there a way for some of us to meet in a zoom with a manageable number so members with a facilitator in order to stay on topic? Possibly with in our local areas?

I wish there were a way to be more participatory. This is more like a webinar. I enjoy hearing everyone's perspectives, but I wish that more were able to participate, including myself.

Reading this book literally made me wanna cry. Not cry because the stories of his patients to cry because out of all the therapy sessions I went to an all the trauma that I’ve experienced in my life somebody actually understood what I was feeling inside without never meeting me. This author wrote, “ we have learned how throughout life experiences changes the structure of function of the brain and even affect the genes we pass on to our children. Understanding many of the fundamental processes that underlie traumatic stress opens the door to an array of interventions that can bring the brain areas related to self-regulation self perception and attention back online. We know not only how to treat trauma but also increasingly how to prevent it.” This book is just that it gave me so much insight about life experiences other people‘s experiences and how they over about how the brain works how the nerve works and send signals throughout the body as to how we respond and how we heal. The author said trauma breeds for the trauma hurt people hurt other people. If you don’t do the work to find resources to seek to find your authentic self but your internal feelings are you will never heal and always be stuck in trauma repeating the same patterns over and over again and repeating the same experience, Without never understanding who you truly are and what you are destined to be. This is a must read ❗️
