✨Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is choose the life others don’t understand. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars) My Review: As a longtime fan of Anne of Green Gables, I was surprised to realize how many other books L. M. Montgomery wrote that I’ve never explored. After seeing a few friends read The Blue Castle, I knew I needed to pick it up—and I’m so glad I did. At the beginning, I pitied Valancy deeply. Her life is constrained by fear, criticism, and family expectations, and she barely seems to know who she is. Yet parts of her insecurity felt very real and relatable. Once she begins to break free from that fear, the story truly comes alive. Watching her discover joy, courage, and the freedom to be her authentic self was one of my favorite parts of the book. Some of her bold moments with her family even made me laugh. In another way, I could relate to Valancy’s experience with her family. My own family has disapproved of many of my life choices over the years, so I understood the sting of feeling misunderstood or judged by the people who should love you most. One of my favorite parts of the story was Barney. I loved the way he treated Valancy—with kindness, gentleness, and genuine respect. And his sweet nickname for her? Swoon. I’m a sucker for sweet nicknames. My own man calls me “sweetheart,” which is equally swoon-worthy. I also loved seeing the quiet joy they find in simply living life and building their own little “Blue Castle” together. The one thing that kept this from being a full five-star read for me was Valancy’s family, particularly her mother. At one point she says she would “rather her be dead” than endure the embarrassment Valancy supposedly brings upon her. As a loss mom, those words were incredibly painful to read. Still, the harshness of her family ultimately highlights just how brave Valancy’s transformation really is. Overall, The Blue Castle is a beautiful story about courage, self-discovery, and finding the freedom to live authentically. 💭 Have you read The Blue Castle yet? I'm so happy I finally read this delightful story! Valancy is a heroine I don't think I'll ever forget. A charming tale about living your own truth. When it comes down to it, we alone are solely responsible for our own happiness.

In my opinion this is the BEST of Lucy Maud Montgomery's works. It is a wonderfully honest and brilliant short novel with REAL people, REAL struggles and some whimsy along the way.

A work (or should I say masterpiece!) that validates the reader's worth through an exploration of its characters' own is a thing of beautiful humility, humble beauty. This novel was recommended to me by my close friend and roommate as her favorite book... I can understand why. There is such a humanity to this story, and to the way in which it is told. For this alone, I am grateful and more than willing to recommend it as well. L.M. Montgomery is a lyric, poetic, authoritative genius.

As Cissy said, we do all have our own blue castles... How gorgeous a thought to seek/find/build them in the lives we live.

What I like about this book is really hard to put into words. The character of Valancy really resonated with me and I connected a lot with her struggles and her hopes for her future. Montgomery is such a talented writer, she gives everything such charm and describes things so beautifully. This is like my comfort book, I love it.
