I participated in a book discussion of The Archer by Paulo Coelho. What fascinated me is the book is designed. For me it feels provocative and thoughtful through the images and the way in which the text is set on the pages. This edition of The Archer blends text with delicate drawings. The book is brief. A quick read, and if you are looking for a story that takes you from the beginning, middle and end. Yes you will achieve that goal. However this small book is by design meant to heighten your sense of self. As you progress through the tale and the imagery at each page you turn, one can take the opportunity to reflect on what is your bow, arrow and target. The wisdom of the archer is paced through the pages varying the length of text and complemented with imagery to encourage the reader to slow down and think critically through intentions, objectives and how one lives a life in a way that fosters a space for community, goals, and overall best life. Yes all that in this small book. I just opened a page right now and still I found a passage that I do not remember and I find it resonates with me on another level. The author gently walks with you through this tale and invites you into calmness and internal discussion about your own bow and arrow and consider thoughtfully your own target.
I had high hopes for this book. At first, I wrote down many quotes & thought I might read the book slowly to savor the wisdom. However, when I picked the book up again, it started to read like forced analogies and instructions.

When spaces on sheet music defines time, and his writing went against my training I knew I couldn’t keep spending time reading none sense, so I breezed through the rest of the book still feeling like I robbed my time.

I have been a fan of Paulo Coehlo's since reading The Alchemist, so when I came upon this quick little audiobook , I was certainly open to listening. I like finding sort, quick listens. Length is not defines how deep or powerful a story can come across to the reader. A truly gifted author can send a profound message to the reader in just a few words. I found listening to the Archer I was hit with the arrows of his words. I highly recommend either reading or listening to The Archer.
