The American Roommate Experiment: A Novel (2) (The Love Deception Series)

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Cosmopolitan, Goodreads, PopSugar, and more!

From the author of the Goodreads Choice Award winner The Spanish Love Deception, the eagerly anticipated follow-up featuring Rosie Graham and Lucas Martín, who are forced to share a New York apartment.

Rosie Graham has a problem. A few, actually. She just quit her well paid job to focus on her secret career as a romance writer. She hasn’t told her family and now has terrible writer’s block. Then, the ceiling of her New York apartment literally crumbles on her. Luckily she has her best friend Lina’s spare key while she’s out of town. But Rosie doesn’t know that Lina has already lent her apartment to her cousin Lucas, who Rosie has been stalking—for lack of a better word—on Instagram for the last few months. Lucas seems intent on coming to her rescue like a Spanish knight in shining armor. Only this one strolls around the place in a towel, has a distracting grin, and an irresistible accent. Oh, and he cooks.

Lucas offers to let Rosie stay with him, at least until she can find some affordable temporary housing. And then he proposes an outrageous experiment to bring back her literary muse and meet her deadline: He’ll take her on a series of experimental dates meant to jump-start her romantic inspiration. Rosie has nothing to lose. Her silly, online crush is totally under control—but Lucas’s time in New York has an expiration date, and six weeks may not be enough, for either her or her deadline.

Read this a few months ago. I never read the first book in this series but this sequel was very enjoyable and cute! The male love interest, Lucas, wasn't a typical grump which was a nice change of pace. He had different emotions and was not afraid to show them as well as actually showing that he cared about the female lead, Rosie. I have mixed feelings on Rosie herself though because she seemed like two different people. From her own point of view, she was an awkward and clumsy woman. But from Lucas' point of view she was bold and sexy. I had a hard time marrying these two images together to make a cohesive picture of who Rosie was, but overall she was a perfectly average narrator and female love interest. The romance was cute to read if only a little awkward and cringy at some points, especially in the beginning with the 911 call and the whole "cronut" thing. I also think the subplot with Rosie's brother was completely useless and not very thoroughly fleshed out. I would recommend this novel though if you're looking for a casual and cute romance read.

The story follows the endearing journey of Lucas and Rosie, two characters from vastly different worlds brought together by a unique roommate arrangement. It explores themes of friendship, acceptance, and the shared human experience. The endearing dating experiment involving Rosie and Lucas is absolutely charming. The authenticity of their fake dates and the gradual development of genuine feelings for each other are portrayed with beautiful storytelling. The conclusion of their story is truly lovely.

This book is a must-read for those seeking a heartwarming story that transcends borders and brings people together in unexpected ways.

While I may have liked The Spanish Deception just a little more than this, I couldn't help but giggle and swoon with Rosie and Lucas. Their connection was instant and I loved the banter between them. Lucas very clearly is a man written by a woman because come on how can he be that cute all the time?

I liked this one more than Spanish Love Deception. I loved Lucas and Rosie together. I liked that this book started off with both of them being attracted to each other and they didn't hide the fact that there was a physical attraction. It was still a slow burn though. The MCs kiss about half way through, but don't actually get together until closer to 70%
