The beginning was a bit slow for me and there were a lot of parts I found predictable however, the book picked up near the end and captivated me into wanting to know what was going to happen next. I had a hard time getting into a grove with this book but was told by many who read it to stick with it and I am glad that I did. I easily fell in love with characters in the book and am hoping for their return in the next two in the trilogy. I also easily disliked characters. I am looking forward to the next books.

Fans of Twilight and Buffy who are looking for their next fix, look no further: this will not disappoint! Deborah Harkness has written an exciting, sexy novel full of mystery, magic, romance and some fun vampire science! It’s a great concept: a young witch (who is trying to avoid being a witch) predictably finds herself drawn into a magical world where history and heritage refuse to allow her to continue ignoring her destiny. To begin with, I couldn’t predict what direction Diana’s story was going to take, which made it even more intriguing. I loved the Oxford University setting. I was less enamoured with the section of the story set in France, which dragged on a little. I think my favourite character was the Bishop family house which was a unique and humorous development in the story.

Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, bingeable fantasy read, perfect for anyone jonesing to escape into a book for a couple of days. Occasionally, however, the characters and the plot felt a little cliché (Matthew was handsome, rich and happy give out foot massages even while chaos was looming). The length of books doesn’t normally bother me but this is L.O.N.G - I sometimes felt that Harkness could have consolidated the plot for a quicker, snappier novel.

I listened to the audiobook which is excellently narrated by Jennifer Ikeda who flips effortlessly between a wide range of well-executed accents (with only a few interesting interpretations of a some British and French words). It was fun reading this in the lead up to Halloween.

This trilogy ruined me for reading for a while. They were so good, and the characters were so amazing, no other book could satisfy. I got over it, but it really took time.
