"What were they thinking?"
"This is a terrible idea."
"Oh, dear."
"Stop."
"Oh my gosh."
"How could you?"
"Messssyyy."
Those were just a few of the reactions I had while reading this book.
The story follows three siblings whose lives spiral after one impulsive decision sets off a chain reaction of increasingly questionable choices. The fascinating part isn't wondering if things will go wrong. It's watching just how spectacularly they unravel.
Reading this book felt like watching a slow-motion car accident. You know exactly where it's heading, yet somehow you can't look away. Every chapter had me hoping someone, anyone, would stop and think for five seconds before making the next decision. Spoiler alert: they rarely do.
The multiple points of view work well because they allow you to understand how each character justifies their actions. No one believes they're making the wrong choice in the moment, and that's what makes the story so entertaining. Their decisions are driven by love, loyalty, fear, and desperation, but logic often takes a back seat, and the consequences are impossible to avoid.
The alternating timelines add another layer of tension. Even when you know certain events are coming, learning how everyone arrived there is what keeps the pages turning.
I managed to piece together part of the twist shortly before it was revealed, but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story. Watching everything unfold was just as satisfying as discovering the truth.
If you enjoy character-driven thrillers filled with messy family dynamics, escalating bad decisions, and enough moral dilemmas to fuel an entire evening of discussion, this would make an excellent book club pick.
Thank you, NetGalley, Gillian McAllister, and William Morrow for the ARC. All comments and opinions are my own.
