Sweet Thing: A Novel

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Before We Were Strangers, an irresistible romance about the complexities of love and self-discovery in the early post-college years.

Mia Kelly thinks she has it all figured out. She’s an Ivy League graduate, a classically trained pianist, and the beloved daughter of a sensible mother and offbeat father. Yet Mia has been stalling since graduation, torn between putting her business degree to use and exploring music, her true love.

When her father unexpectedly dies, she decides to pick up the threads of his life while she figures out her own. Uprooting herself from Ann Arbor to New York City, Mia takes over her father’s café, a treasured neighborhood institution that plays host to undiscovered musicians and artists. She’s denied herself the thrilling and unpredictable life of a musician, but a chance encounter with Will, a sweet, gorgeous, and charming guitarist, offers her a glimpse of what could be. When Will becomes her friend and then her roommate, she does everything in her power to suppress her passions—for him, for music—but her father’s legacy slowly opens her heart to the possibility of something more.

I could definitely tell this was one of Renée’s earlier works. Everything that happened felt way too convenient or unrealistic but somehow, it all still managed to happen. Like with so many book characters, I just kept thinking, if they’d only gone to therapy, half of these dramatic meltdowns wouldn’t exist. But it was 2009, and BetterHelp wasn’t a thing yet.

I made it through, but honestly, this book didn’t make me feel much if anything, it made me thankful to never experience a love like Will and Mia’s.

——SPOILERS——
Things I was right about:
•Will slept with Sonja
•Will got Mia a new puppy and named her June

This was the first book I purchased for myself & it was highly disappointing. I eggxpected it to be sweet but throughout most chapters it’d have you screaming at the main character for making dumb decisions. This book felt so bitter most of the time & towards the end it felt like the author rushed it by patching the wound with the fact they ended up getting married so quickly. A 2 out of 5 for me
