Suburban Hell

A Chicago cul-de-sac is about to get a new neighbor...of the demonic kind.

Amy Foster considers herself lucky. After she left the city and moved to the suburbs, she found her place quickly with neighbors Liz, Jess, and Melissa, snarking together from the outskirts of the PTA crowd. One night during their monthly wine get-together, the crew concoct a plan for a clubhouse She Shed in Liz’s backyard—a space for just them, no spouses or kids allowed.

But the night after they christen the She Shed, things start to feel . . . off. They didn’t expect Liz’s little home-improvement project to release a demonic force that turns their quiet enclave into something out of a nightmare. And that’s before the homeowners’ association gets wind of it.

Even the calmest moms can’t justify the strange burn marks, self-moving dolls, and horrible smells surrounding their possessed friend, Liz. Together, Amy, Jess, and Melissa must fight the evil spirit to save Liz and the neighborhood . . . before the suburbs go completely to hell.

Yeah, I had fun with this one.

A group of suburban housewives are forced to act when one of them is possessed. I wasn't sure about this one going in. I even looked at a paperback copy at Barnes and Noble and passed. I love the cover!
Fast-forward to a few weeks ago. It popped up as a deal on BookBub and for just $1.99, I couldn't resist.
Last week, I decided to check it out, and man, am I glad I did.
While there is a lot of everyday stuff going on in this book, it really seemed to make the creepy parts even creepier. If you have kids, you'll probably relate to a lot of this!
A couple of scenes that stand out are the Barbie Dreamhouse that Amy finds beneath her daughter's bed while searching for the Oujia board! Also whenever Amy and Liz (the possessed) are together as Amy's trying to figure out what's really going on with her friend.... these are some great little creepfest scenes.

Overall, I really dug this one.
If you're on the fence, go ahead and check it out!

What a fun read! It reminded me of Desperate Housewives in a way. It had the perfect amount of horror elements mixed in with a little humor. I'll keep an eye out for more Maureen Kilmer books in the near future.

Oujia boards and wine night. What more can you ask for? Suburban Hell is a fun little book about a group of moms and a demon. I thought it would be a little more tongue-in-cheek, and perhaps a satire about suburban moms, but it seems fairly earnest. While I didn't find any of the characters likable, your mileage may vary. This would be a good read for someone who wants to read a little bit of horror but wants to start with something light.

"Suburban Hell" by Maureen Kilmer is a bleak and unsettling novel that explores the dark underbelly of suburbia. The novel follows the lives of several residents of a suburban neighborhood, each struggling with their own personal demons and secrets. Kilmer's writing is raw and uncompromising, delving deep into the psyches of her characters and exposing the ugly truths beneath their polished exteriors. She paints a vivid and disturbing portrait of suburbia, showing how it can be a breeding ground for dysfunction and despair. One of the strengths of the novel is its exploration of the themes of isolation and loneliness. Kilmer's characters are all struggling to connect with others, and their attempts to do so often lead to disastrous consequences. The novel is a powerful commentary on the isolating effects of modern life, and it is all the more powerful for its unflinching portrayal of these issues. However, while the novel is powerful and thought-provoking, it can also be a difficult read. The characters are not always likable or sympathetic, and their struggles can be depressing and hard to stomach. Additionally, the novel can feel a little disjointed at times, with the different storylines not always coming together in a satisfying way. Overall, "Suburban Hell" is a challenging and intense novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy dark and gritty fiction. Kilmer's writing is powerful and evocative, and she creates a world that is both disturbing and compelling. While the novel may not be for everyone, those who are willing to delve into its bleak and unsettling world will find much to appreciate in this powerful work of fiction.
