Here is my ❤️. She 💔 it. Then ❤️‍🩹 it.
This is NOT for the faint of heart. It is rough, raw, and beautiful.
I don’t post a review for every book I read but I HAD TO TALK ABOUT THIS ONE. I haven’t read dark romance in a while but I picked it up on a whim to shake things up after I saw multiple booktubers I follow talk about this. And I was hesitant at first bc I know the hype originated on tiktok. BUT WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK!? This spoke to me on a visceral level.
If I had to pitch this, I’d say it’s a mash up between Investigation Discovery and a Colleen Hoover book, but with a much much better conclusion that most Hoover books end with.
Before I elaborate, let me say this- this is DARK and it can be very triggering. Please please proceed with caution if you’re are triggered by Sexual Assault, Suicide, PTSD, etc. But if you can ride out the rough parts, the end is so honest and beautiful.
Long story, short- Cora and her sister’s fiancé, Dean, are taken captive by a sadistic fuck and they go through really terrible things. They manage to escape and we witness them try to cope with what happened to them and between them. It’s a romance book so you know there is going to be a happy ending. But the journey there is tough, infuriating, raw, and very toxic. And I think that’s why people may HATE this book.
But here’s the deal, it’s a fictional book. In no way do I idolize the toxic relationship between Cora and Dean as they figure out what they are. However, as someone who has dealt with mental illness and SA, I found Cora’s irritating behavior to be relatable. I have been in that headspace before and in hindsight I’m like “wtf was wrong with me?!” But that’s what it’s like. I found it to be perfectly understandable considering all they had been through.
