I'm a Star Trek fan — TV, movies, books, cartoon, even the comic books — but I have to admit that I didn't know what to expect from Starfleet Year One. I was even a little apprehensive. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. The story is strong, with characters that really embody the spirit of the Star Trek universe, while still carrying along the elements of transition from being founded in the military. I wouldn't be surprised if Star Trek: Enterprise (the TV series) borrowed from this in that area (despite the disclaimer on the title page). I enjoyed getting more in-depth description of the Federation birth following the Romulan War, giving life to elements that I had read (or viewed) previously as ancient history. If you're a fan of this universe, this is a must. Highly recommended!
