I didn't love this book, but the ending feels like a setup for a series I will enjoy the rest of. It didn't really grip me. I was never desperate or excited to keep reading. We end with a lot of questions and pretty much no answers, which I actually don't like any book ending that way - even if it is a series. I feel like I deserve at least a couple of answers. But even tho I struggled through 75% of this book, I think I will still read whatever is next.
I had a good time reading Spark of the Everflame. I enjoyed the fantasy, relationship building, and Diem as a main character. She is capable, stubborn, headstrong, and very willing to throw herself into situations that could get her killed. I liked her immensely.
Diem is searching for answers after her mother disappears. That search uncovers secrets about her family, the Descended, and Diem herself. I liked that her relationship with Luther was happening alongside all of that instead of becoming the entire focus of her life. She has plenty going on without a man taking over the plot.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Diem and Luther. The spicy scenes are focused on how they feel about each other rather than what exactly everyone is doing with their body parts. The spicy scenes are high intensity, but pretty tame when it comes to actual detail. I would have liked a little more detail, but the feeling of lust was there.
Diem faking being a healer was where things got questionable for me. The book spends a lot of time telling us she is a skilled healer. She is supposed to be bluffing her way through parts of her healing role, but then she starts doing a pretty decent job at it. Are we pretending or are we qualified? Please pick a lane for your backstory.
The book was gorier than I expected. There were several moments where I was like, "Oh, we are doing that. Okay!" I did not dislike it, but it surprised me. My biggest complaint is that the book felt too long for what actually happened. A lot of it is clearly laying the groundwork for the rest of the series. I can appreciate the world building, but I definitely felt the setup at times. The civil war storyline is probably the part I care about the least. I am much more interested in Diem’s secrets, her abilities, and whatever is happening with Luther.
I am curious enough to pick up book two, but if we spend the entire book discussing war strategy and political factions, I may tap out of the series. Pick this up if you are looking for a slower fantasy with great worldbuilding and a strong heroine.
