I think the comparison to Catcher in the Rye is appropriate, I would say this has a similar sort of approach to the main character and their view of the world, but is updated for a more contemporary setting and understanding of what teen lives are like in the digital age. Unfortunately, I hated Catcher in the Rye, so the aspects of it that were similar to this book are what made me enjoy the book less. I did like it overall, mostly because I love these characters from the Heartstopper comics. If it didn't have the connection to them, though, I think I would have had a much harder time enjoying this.

I went into this book as a big fan of Heartstopper having been told that the two were very different. They are! But I loved this book nonetheless, and finished it in less than 3 days.

While Heartstopper has a lot more fluffy romance, this book definitely has the more cynical vibe of nothing-matters-and-people-only-disappoint-you, while also showing the fearfulness of spending your life truly alone. I really connected to Tori, and it's honestly impossible not to love Michael. Always a fan of Nick and Charlie, and I thought it was a really interesting take to see their relationship through Tori's eyes. This book has definitely solidified me as an Alice Oseman fan, and I can't wait to read the rest of her works!

I’m having A LOT of thoughts! What were the adults on??? Your 16 yo daughter found your 15 yo son bleed out to near death and you do,,, nothing??? The way mental health issues were tackled in this book was,,, something else. Also what was the deal with all of the unchallenged misogynistic comments the MC makes???

“But books- they’re different. When you watch a film, you’re sort of an outsider looking in. with a book- you’re right there. You are the main character.”

First things first, I’m the Tori Spring of me and my siblings. Please don’t look into it. I’m getting help, I promise. Anyway, I found this book not only relatable but also nothing like anything I’ve ever read before. Having read Heartstopper first, I really enjoyed learning about Tori. Michael Holden is a lovely human. I wish I had a Michael Holden in my life.
