So Thirsty
A woman must learn to take life by the throat after a night out leads to irrevocable changes in this juicy, thrilling novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Such Sharp Teeth and Black Sheep. Sloane Parker is dreading her birthday. She doesn't need a reminder she's getting older, or that she's feeling indifferent about her own life. Her husband surprises her with a birthday-weekend getaway--not with him, but with Sloane's longtime best friend, troublemaker extraordinaire Naomi. Sloane anticipates a weekend of wine tastings and cozy robes and strategic avoidance of issues she'd rather not confront, like her husband's repeated infidelity. But when they arrive at their rental cottage, it becomes clear Naomi has something else in mind. She wants Sloane to stop letting things happen to her, for Sloane to really live. So Naomi orchestrates a wild night out with a group of mysterious strangers, only for it to take a horrifying turn that changes Sloane's and Naomi's lives literally forever. The friends are forced to come to terms with some pretty eternal consequences in this bloody, seductive novel about how it's never too late to find satisfaction, even though it might taste different than expected.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 43%.
I think people who like messy millennial girl lit and like their horror more gross and disturbing than spooky and scary might enjoy this.
I knew I was taking a bit of a gamble on this author. I loved Such Sharp Teeth but I didn't love Cackle, and I wasn't sure where their Vampire horror would land. I found Cackle to be unhinged and sloppy, but still a page turner that had fun moments. I'm having no fun at all with So Thirsty.
I was going to power through and finish it anyway, even though I am certain that there is nothing the book can do from here that would make me enjoy it more. I decided to DNF because I realized I'm actively avoiding reading it before bed because it puts me in a bad mood that makes it harder to fall asleep.
My issues: The Vampires are gross. I understand the point of the uncomfortable sex party, but it made my skin crawl the whole time I had to read about it, and that's not the type of horror I'm personally looking for. The main character is a total bummer to be in the headspace of, she thinks about nothing but being jealous of her friend, her cheating husband, and obsessing about aging. The woman is 36, and when she washes her hands while trapped at an uncomfortable sex party she worries about her hands looking older because she's stripping the natural oils. Girl, stop. This should not be your concern. If I didn't like the Vampires and I didn't like the main character, what else was there for me to enjoy? The Friendship? This toxic push and pull between flat characters is not a friendship I want to read about. The Romance? Oh, the insta-love over a cliché mystery guy who seems like he's been living in a dumpster for 2 centuries? Actually a worse love story than Twilight.
Content Warnings:
Graphic: Infidelity, Sexual content, and Blood
Moderate: Violence and Alcohol

Iâm actually really disappointed in this book. Rachel Harrison is one of my favorite authors, Iâve read all of her other novels and theyâve all been utter perfection. But this one fell short. The plot was messy and it didnât have to be. The book couldâve been 100 pages longer and it couldâve went into the backstory of vampirism in Rachelâs world. It was just barely explained. I wouldâve loved history on all the vampire characters (who were arguably the best part of this story) and learned what being a vampire is like. Not enough detail in that regard. The romance was underdeveloped, and the âfriendshipâ felt like two high school girls who hated each other acting as friends. The ending left much to be desired and actually really confused me. Iâm not even sure what happened. I donât regret reading this book, however it couldâve been SO much better. It had lots of potential that just didnât pan out.
