PFS Book Club ---1st June Today we reviewed book called “So good they can’t ignore you” by Cal Newport This book challenges the conventional thinking of following your passion when it comes to finding work you love. Chandrashekhar started the session with first lesson of book “don’t follow your passion”. For anyone interested in being part of the PFS Book Club, please use the link to join the WhatsApp group. To be successful we have to identify what we are passionate about and then take career which matches this passion. Chandrashekhar says that following passion is dangerous advice to people. Chandrashekhar mentions that passion comes after deliberate practice, it takes time to become good at what we do and then that mastery leads to passion. Newport mentions that we all should adopt craftsman mindset. We should focus on what value we add to our job rather than what value job adds to us. Do deliberate practice to build career capital. We have to decide what career capital we want to build winner take market which focuses on only one skill or auction type which focuses on many skills. Deliberate practice is tough and get feedback on what is working or not. To build career capital we need patience, and have to stretch ourselves and one day we realize we are too good to be ignored. We discussed 10000 hours rule, which explains that 10000 hours is the number that is required to practice to achieve excellence. This level of deliberate practice gives you cutting edge in what you do. Chandrashekhar also mentioned about the importance of control. Control over what we do is one of the most powerful traits we can acquire when creating work we love. Control that is built without career capital is not sustainable. We also discussed about think small and act big. We should think of career mission. To get cutting edge we need to many acts of small thinking as mission is sometimes hard. We discussed about book called little bets which explains how series of little bets in good direction led to significant wins. We also discussed about mission requires marketing as well. Your mission should force people to talk about the same or should be talked about by yourself where people value it. We talked about book called deep work as well of this author.
