A young Native girl's hunt for answers about the women mysteriously disappearing from her tribe's reservation leads her to delve into the myths and stories of her people, all while being haunted herself, in this atmospheric and stunningly poignant debut.

Anna Horn is always looking over her shoulder. For the bullies who torment her, for the entitled visitors at the reservation’s casino…and for the nameless, disembodied entity that stalks her every step—an ancient tribal myth come-to-life, one that’s intent on devouring her whole.

With strange and sinister happenings occurring around the casino, Anna starts to suspect that not all the horrors on the reservation are old. As girls begin to go missing and the tribe scrambles to find answers, Anna struggles with her place on the rez, desperately searching for the key she’s sure lies in the legends of her tribe’s past.

When Anna’s own little sister also disappears, she’ll do anything to bring Grace home. But the demons plaguing the reservation—both ancient and new—are strong, and sometimes, it’s the stories that never get told that are the most important.

Part gripping thriller and part mythological horror, author Nick Medina spins an incisive and timely novel of life as an outcast, the cost of forgetting tradition, and the courage it takes to become who you were always meant to be.

6.5 🌟 rounded up due to the spotlight it shines on the issues faced by the tribe. While sex traffing affects all, I didn't realize it disproportionately did so for native American women. While this story was fictional it was based in facts. I personally thought the story started slow but it did pick up pace. This was an interesting look into a tribe's dealing with the outside world as well as issues inside the tribe itself. I really liked the author's notes at the end giving us a glimpse into how the story developed and the reality of the tragedies faced by these people.

This was hard for me to get into, forced myself to finish because I was reading it in a book club. The hard truths though about native Americans and how badly they are disregarded

A solid debut that explores some real issues in Native American culture. This story follows Anna, as she searches for her missing sister, ultimately uncovering a brutal reality involving Native women and girls. Harsh themes including murder, trafficking, and SA (off page).

I enjoyed the story line. The fortitude of a sister trying to find her missing sister, as well as connected disappearances of other Native women in her life, was something I could definitely relate to. She did not give up when the questions she needed to ask were hard or the people she needed to ask them of were dangerous. It is sad how much of this is rooted in some truth.

Filled with mystery and myth, this is a thrilling tale of how one girl’s determination to find her sister leads to uncovering the nightmares hidden within their community. I enjoyed the choice the author made to jump back and forth in time as the story unfolds. It allows the reader to see the story from both Day 1 with how it all began, and then also from the day of Grace’s disappearance and the start of the investigation.

Though there are aspects of fantasy, there is no doubt that this novel is rooted in real life horrors. For years there has been an epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women, and the efforts to find them are often underfunded and hampered by overlap in legal jurisdictions. The story of Anna and Grace is one of strength and determination, and I’m so very glad I picked it up.
