My all time favorite novel. The one book I’d take to a desert island.

Christmas Day, 2023 - there I was, watching the Celtics play the Lakers when it cut to commercial during a time out. An advertisement for a new show coming out, Shogun, caught my attention, especially when it was mentioned it was adapted from a book by James Clavell.

Well, now. I just had to read it.

Reading this chonker took quite some time, especially since I started watching the TV series as the episodes were released.

Having spent my entire life in the South, I can’t comment on the historical accuracy of James Clavell's depiction of medieval Japan. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed the fictional journey of John Blackthorne and his struggles to adapt to Japanese culture.

Despite the slow pacing, the story never felt dull. Clavell masterfully balanced moments of humor with shocking and horrifying scenes, punctuated by intense violence. The intricate scheming between the regents and vassals, particularly the shrewd Lord Toranaga, was exceptionally well written and captivating.

The characters were the highlight of this incredible tale. On the surface, it’s a brutal struggle for power, but underneath lies a touching love story. This combination of depth and complexity made it a truly memorable read.

Ralph Lister did an amazing job with his audio narration of this epic tale. I was in awe of his ability to change tones, apply the correct accents and speak in so many different languages. If at all possible, check it out from your local library so that you're able to get the complete audiobook, as opposed to purchasing the book in two parts from Audible.

This was my first experience reading James Clavell, but it will not be my last.
