The book was good, however, I didn’t start enjoying until about 60% in. I’m not sure what my level is in vocabulary words, but I felt that there were so many words that I had to google! Great because I get to learn more but…yeaaaa. I enjoyed the plot and how the characters grew over time. I felt like Zhu was becoming very disconnected with the people around her and became very selfish and self-focused. Asked a lot of those around her but didn’t give anything in return.
3.5 - this started off strong and started dragging real fast once the formation and world-building was done; i'm not a huge fan of wartime in books (the poppy war is a masterfully done exception) and that's mostly what this was. i felt that zhu's character was very one-dimensional - and yes, that was the whole point, basing her survival off her single-minded desire to reach for her fate of greatness, but there was definitely opportunity to flesh out her character and personality and moreso illustrate the character development that she mentions observing in herself over the course of the book. i did really like ouyang's character and storyline, by far the more appealing half of the book plot-wise. if i do pick up the sequel i'll be interested to see what happens next in his journey more than anything!
