This was my first time reading Mike Resnick's work and I was not disappointed in any way. Santiago has characters that are vibrant and alive. I've heard people compare this to the TV series Firefly, but it's far more than that. It's the story of five characters who ARE characters, all searching for the same thing: Santiago. Why? Because he's got something that they all want. All the same, they're all at least a little afraid to find him, almost like he's an addictive substance that they're afraid they can't stand up against. It's well written and a great read. I read it in a single day, nearly 400 pages and no need for a break. Highly recommended!
