Sally's Lament: A Twisted Tale

By Mari Mancusi

Disney’s New York Times best-selling A Twisted Tale series meets perennial fan-favorite The Nightmare Before Christmas, asking “What if Sally discovered Christmas Town instead of Jack?” Sally has mostly loved her creepy hometown of Halloween Town. But lately, she can't help but want something more. In a place full of the frightening, you'd think living in the shadows wouldn't feel so . . . isolating. She knows she could do so much more if she wasn't always stuck in the lab of her creator, Dr. Finkelstein. Soon Sally is surprised to learn that the Pumpkin King, Jack, is longing for a change of his own. Determined to find a  solution for them both, Sally follows a vision that could be the  key to changing their fates. But the more time Sally spends in the strange, jolly land of Christmas Town, the more suspicious she grows of the seemingly idyllic winter wonderland. What is lurking behind those dancing sugar  plums? And what exactly does it mean to be put on the Naughty List? Will Sally be able to save the best of both towns—before it's  too late?

What happens when Halloween Town’s most lovable rag doll gets to take the reins instead of the Pumpkin King? Sally’s Lament is a delightful dose of The Nightmare Before Christmas nostalgia that gives Sally the independence, courage, and recognition she has always deserved. This story is a clever spin on the beloved Disney classic by imagining Sally discovering Christmas Town instead of Jack Skellington. Sally escapes the controlling Dr. Finkelstein and finds herself enchanted by a winter wonderland filled with holiday cheer. Beneath the festive decorations and Christmas magic lies a disturbing secret involving Santa’s Naughty List. Sally soon discovers that saving Christmas might require more than a little holiday spirit. I loved seeing Sally take center stage. Her compassion, intelligence, and determination made her such a wonderful heroine. Watching her stand up to Dr. Finkelstein was satisfying. I was cheering for our girl! Her journey from a captive creation to an independent woman with dreams of her own was so delightful. Sally's struggle for autonomy brought an unexpectedly modern perspective to the narrative. Artificial intelligence and increasingly sophisticated robotics are becoming part of our everyday lives. I couldn't help drawing parallels between Sally and the emerging questions surrounding sentience and independence. She was created to serve someone else's needs. Then, her intelligence, emotions, and ambitions make her so much more than her creator intended. I appreciated how Mancusi explored the importance of self determination through such a familiar character. Jack seemed to be experiencing some rather dramatic emotional highs and lows. His restless pursuit of happiness felt familiar from the original film. Although, his mood swings were particularly pronounced here. I liked the greater involvement of Santa Claus and the opportunity to explore Christmas Town beyond its cheerful exterior. The darker interpretation of the Naughty List added an intriguing layer to this nostalgic adventure. The romance between Jack and Sally faded into the background. Sally's personal growth got the spotlight, so the romantic moments occasionally appeared so unexpectedly that they interrupted the natural flow of her journey. Their relationship felt secondary to the larger adventure. I would have preferred a little more development to make those affectionate moments feel cohesive. Pick up Sally’s Lament if you want a charming reimagining that celebrates individuality, compassion, and the courage to create your own future.
