Running with Scissors: A Memoir

The #1 New York Times bestselling memoir from Augusten Burroughs, Running with Scissors, now a Major Motion Picture!

Running with Scissors is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her psychiatrist, a dead-ringer for Santa and a lunatic in the bargain. Suddenly, at age twelve, Augusten Burroughs found himself living in a dilapidated Victorian in perfect squalor. The doctor's bizarre family, a few patients, and a pedophile living in the backyard shed completed the tableau. Here, there were no rules, there was no school. The Christmas tree stayed up until summer, and Valium was eaten like Pez. And when things got dull, there was always the vintage electroshock therapy machine under the stairs....

Running with Scissors is at turns foul and harrowing, compelling and maniacally funny. But above all, it chronicles an ordinary boy's survival under the most extraordinary circumstances.

Made it page 103, this book is very well written and tells an incredible story, it was just a story I couldn't handle. I hope everyone else enjoys.

This book was recommended by a couple of my coworkers and despite it being out of my typical genre I read it. Coming from a fairly "quirky" family myself I can understand that crazy family members can be funny, however I found this story depressing and disturbing. I guess It probably wouldn't have been such a shock had my coworkers described the book as a "shocking and sad, true story" instead of "witty and funny." Not my favorite.

3.5. The characters are unlikeable and it was less funny than I expected. Still an interesting read. If you're neurotypical and didn't have childhood trauma then this book will probably not be enjoyable.

As far as a memoir goes it's fine. I think I would've like it better though if I'd actually read the book and not listened to the audio. The audible version was read by the author, which literally sounded like I was being read to.
