The pairing in The Me You Love In The Dark comes across as an allegory for an abusive and toxic relationship with a setting similar to the classic American Horror Story television show.
On the surface, Ro is a well known artist looking to be inspired to create new work for an upcoming show. Drawn to a large old house, believed to be haunted, nothing quite prepares her for the "something" that's actually present in house with her.
In the beginning, things are lite, funny, fun, mysterious and exciting. But the closer Ro becomes to this thing, the more obsessed, controlling and demanding it becomes. Manipulating and consuming her every action.
Ro becomes a shut-tin, she's miserable, edgy, and cut off from the real world. It was interesting to see Ro go from freeze mode to passive indifference to the thing she's been having a domestic relationship with for months.
When her agent from New York makes a surprise appearance, the bad goes to worse and Ro's forced to face the reality of her situation.
First time reading from these authors and this story. I would love to read more from them.
