Juliette has “superhuman strength, nearly as invincible skin, a lethal touch, only seventeen years to [her] name, and [she has] single-handedly felled the despot of this nation.” She inspired the people of Sector 45 to follow her into battle. “They put their lives on the line—they sacrificed their loved ones—because they believed” in her. In her strength. And she didn’t let them down. “Our nation needed change. It needed a leader with heart and passion and…Juliette cares about these people. She cares about their hopes, their fears—and she will fight for them in a way [others] never would.” However, she’s just discovered that everyone closest to her has been lying to her. Using her. Manipulating her for their own needs. Her parents are still alive, “and apparently they’re no better than the abusive monsters who adopted” her. She has a sister being actively tortured by The Reestablishment—a sister she never even knew existed. Juliette has no idea who to trust or how to move forward. She doesn’t know what she’s fighting for anymore, and she doesn't know who her friends are. “Right now…everyone is my enemy, including you.” She squeezes her eyes shut and screams, anger and heartbreak and exhaustion and crushing devastation filling her lungs…the weight of recent weeks, the pain of all these years, the embarrassment of false hopes manufactured in her heart, betrayal, loss—Adam. Warner. Castle. Her parents, real and imagined. A sister she might never know. The lies that make up her life. The threats against the innocent people in Sector 45. The certain death that awaits her. “The frustration of having so much power…and feeling so utterly, completely useless.” But they are forgetting where she started, what she’s overcome, how quickly she found the courage to fight when they could hardly stand. The world tried to crush her and she refused to be shattered. She’s recovered from every setback a stronger person, rising from the ashes only to astonish everyone around her. And she will continue to surprise and confuse those who underestimate her. Tahereh Mafi’s Restore Me slays.

I had extremely high hopes for this book, coming off the high I got from IGNITE ME (which was 5 stars- good god, Aaron Warner). Unfortunately, what this book did was throw me into a reading slump. It took me almost a month to finish this one. It isn’t because the book was bad or had awful tropes or bad writing style— it’s because IGNITE ME, warmed me to my very core and filled me with so much love and happiness and as I read RESTORE ME, I could feel it robbing me of those feelings, one page at a time. Juliette finally allowed herself to openly reciprocate Warners love and RESTORE ME destroyed them. This was still a good book that I would still recommend; but it sincerely broke my heart.
