Red City: Dark academia fantasy where two alchemists are separated by a magical gang-war

DELUXE EDITIONa stunning hardcover edition featuring dark crimson sprayed edges

The Godfather meets The Magicians in the sweeping adult debut from #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu. Perfect for fans of V.E. Schwab, Red City is a dark and deadly contemporary fantasy of magical warfare, star-crossed ambition, and the pursuit of perfection at any cost, set in a glittering alternate Los Angeles.

Alchemy is the hidden art of transformation. An exclusive power wielded by crime syndicates that market it to the world’s elites in the form of sand, a drug that enhances those who take it into a more perfect version of themselves: more beautiful, more charismatic, simply more.

Among the gleaming skyscrapers and rolling foothills of Angel City, alchemy is controlled by two rival syndicates. For years, Grand Central and Lumines have been balanced on a razor’s edge between polite negotiation and outright violence. But when two childhood friends step into that delicate equation, the city—and the paths of their lives—will be irrevocably transformed.

The daughter of a poor single mother, Sam would do anything to claw her way into the ranks of Grand Central in search of a better life. Plucked away from his family as a boy to become a Lumines apprentice, Ari is one of the syndicates' brightest rising stars. Once, they might have loved each other. But as the two alchemists face off across opposite sides of an ever-escalating conflict, ambition becomes power, loyalty becomes lies, and no transformation may be perfect enough for them both to survive the coming war.

In some ways I don’t know how to express my feelings for this book. I did very much enjoy it and I am excited to read the rest of the series when it comes out but I had a hard time getting into it. The concept of the syndicates and alchemy as a whole is intriguing but I found the content a bit dense in the beginning while I was still trying to figure out what the world is about. In a way I found it purposeful because Sam and Ari are also trying to learn so we are meant to feel similar but it made it tough for me to get into until the second part. By the time Sam and Ari become true alchemists, I knew it was going to get good and I was not disappointed because it just kept ramping up. I enjoyed both our main characters, I found them realistic and adorable and although sometimes frustrating, I loved their journeys which led to a very satisfying conclusion that sets us up well for a future book two!

Red City begins with the protagonist, Sam, growing up in poverty under the care of her single mother. From a young age, she’s subjected to harsh discipline, taught that even a moment of carelessness can have lasting consequences. One defining incident at the beginning: her mother destroying a prized toy rabbit she had once lovingly gifted, this sets the tone for the unforgiving world Sam is raised in and what the readers will later expose to. By early adulthood, Sam has learned to turn survival into strategy. Using her "social invisibility" as an advantage. As an alchemist, she builds leverage and amasses a growing fortune by aligning herself with a powerful syndicate, the Grand Central. The story ultimately circles a central question: can you truly have everything you want when every gain risks an irreversible loss? I could include about the main character's two conflicting love interests - but this review will turn into an essay-length of angry rambles.
